How to Secure Your Home
Home security, it's on everyone's mind and it's also been on the news media recently. What does it take to properly secure a home? By implementing our suggestions one can better understand home security.
First and foremost ensure the locks on the residence are secure. This means doors and windows - even the entry points on any upper floors. There's no reason to give an intruder an easy way in -- LOCK THOSE DOORS AND WINDOWS.
Second, ensure the locks on the door and up-to-date and that there are no "spare keys" floating around. Many keys can be copied by simply going to the hardware store and requesting a copy. That key was loaned to an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend last year might have been easily copied. Look into door locking systems that can be quickly re-keyed should situation arise. Kwikset makes a product called "Smart Key" that is not only bump proof but can also be SIMPLY re-keyed in just a few seconds.
Third, electronic systems. Exterior lighting and alarm systems can help. Install motion activated flood lights around the property. Install a security system that has monitoring and a LOUD interior and exterior siren. A thief looking for a house might just skip right over the well-lit and alarmed one.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that these are just prevention methods. If a determined burglar wants into a property, other than living in a castle or under the ground, there is no way to be 100% secure. Current homes have many windows and easy access points for a potential burglar.
